This photo looks fairly boring. It is a photo of the Gascoyne River in June 2010. There was not a scrap of water, just a dry dusty riverbed. In the week before Christmas Carnavon received its yearly rain in a 24 hour period with the devastating result of flooding of the town and the plantations that are along the river. This dry river bed became full of raging torrents of water coming from the inland of Western Australia. The river peaked at 7.5 metres which mean this tree was mostly underwater. Below is a photo of the river in full flood, courtesy of the West Australian web site.

Carnarvon is Western Australi's food bowl - mangoes, bananas, tomatos, pumpkins and many other vegetables. We are noticing prices rising and many farmers are devastated in the losses they have experienced. My thought and empathy are with these people during this trying time.
