Road Trip – Day 58 (May 12)

We woke early at the Adelaide River showgrounds to find ice on the ground and fog in the distance.

Taking our time to pack up, we finally got on the farm to drive the 80kms to the Oasis Caravan Park in outer Darwin. As we approached Darwin we saw the old WWII airstrips alongside the road, remaining from the war. Darwin sustained more than 60 airstrikes from the Japanese during the war which saw the Australian HQ being moved back to Adelaide River and Civilian Administration being moved back to Alice Springs. We saw three or four of these remnant airstrips from the WWII days.

We drove a small way on the airstrip back to main highway.

Beautiful Government House was damaged during the initial raid on Darwin but was restored and re-occupied.

After setting up camp and having lunch we went for a drive into Darwin to have a look around. On our way back we drove around the suburb of Howard Springs which has mango orchards. We saw this lagoon on our way back to the caravan park.
