Dubbo………………………………..Day 74

6 June 2014

As with the best laid plans things change. By 8 am this morning our destination was not Narromine but Dubbo. We don’t plan very far ahead just the next town and our days destination can change at the drop of a hat.

We set off to Peak Hills which has a Tourist Gold mine open pit. Unfortunately, for those of us that have seen the super pit of Kalgoolie, this was just a small mine. Gold was discovered at Peak Hill in 1889 and the mine ceased production and was closed 2002.

Peak Hill is known for it fame as the place where the first Australian Wheat Silo was built. We tried to have a look but the road didn’t look good for the caravans to travel on.

I saw this Art deco looking building in the main street. It was built in 1912 and was the shire offices until amalgamation of 3 shires in the 80’s.

Dubbo wasn’t far away so we reached our destination, found the information centre, found a kennel for Kurgan while we check out the Taronga Western Plains Zoo and the just chilled out for a bit.

We went out to the entrance of the Western Plains Zoo and found another Rhino Statue.

A herd of 45 brightly-coloured rhino sculptures went under the auctioneer’s hammer last night, raising more than $460,000 for Taronga Zoo’s rhino breeding and field conservation programs. They were part of Taronga’s Wild! Rhinos project, which saw 125 rhino sculptures installed through the Sydney CBD and in regional centres on a trail to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.
