Another lovely day today. There was little rain last night which is a shame for the locals as 65% of Queensland is declared a drought area.
We went into town today to have a look around. This is a town that was moved after the devastating flood of 1916. I took a photo of a replica piano in a tree where a piano had been left after the flood waters had receded. In all there were 3 pianos found in trees, and 65 people died. Later during the clean up more bodies were also found. This was the second worst flood in Australia’s history in terms of loss of life.
Above the maker for the flood was a kookaburra who looked like he was king of the castle.
We then went to have a look at Hood’s Lagoon where I found these cute ducks.
On our way back to the dam we stopped to look at the old Copperfield Store. In 1862 a 10 metre high wall of solid copper was discovered here and by the mid 1860’s there were 3 hotels, a butcher, blacksmith, newsagent etc. All that remains now is this old store, the single chimney stack which was once one of 21 and the cemetery. The old store was restore in 1992 and still contains the merchandise that was there when it closed.
Again driving further along the road we saw a Caterpillar tractor on a huge post (as you do). Just one of the oddities we have seen on this journey.
Back at Theresa Creek Dam, Denise cooked a roast beef in the camp over and I cooked golden syrup dumplings for dessert. We are both getting quite good at cooking on the camp fire.
Nature has a way of reminding you where home is. We know that the setting sun is always showing us where home is. Tonight was a vivid reminder.
When we turned to take photos of the caravans Denise and I were thrilled to see a rainbow stretching over both caravans.
Again I hope to take the computer into town to upload this blog tomorrow.
