Maitland………………………..Day 13

5 April 2014

Today we decided to drive around the surrounding areas of Maitland. Our first tiny town was Arthurton, consisting of a general store, church and some sort of farm supplies. You see all sorts of things while driving around and today it was The Bike Fence, made from bicycles.

Next it was on to East Moonta where we spent some time looking at old ruins of the copper mining industry. The Hughes Enginehouse was built in the 1860’s. Its function was to dewater the the underground workings on the largest copper ore bodies. It was closed in 1923.

We then went and had a look at the old tailing heap which is 20 metres high. I mention the height as John, Denise & I climbed the steps up to the top of the heap.

This is John who passed me on the way up the steps.

The Richman’s Engine house was built in 1869 to haul, pump and crush and concentrate the ore until the copper mines close in 1923. Walking around we saw  green coloured rocks in the ground, indicating the presence of copper.

It is now getting colder at nights.
