Road Trip – Day 10

Our first caravan park camp since Norseman, where we had power. We arrived at the Nullabor Roadhouse about 4.30pm (South Australian Time) & decided to camp at the caravan park. Internet connection, showers, & power for the car fridge. However the time zone change confused some people when it came to morning, with some of us working to SA Time and some to West Australian Time. (We had already changed to Central West Australian time a day earlier). this meant some were still asleep at the 8.30 “kick off” time (in SA time).

As it wasn’t light until 7am I managed to catch a sunrise photo and noticed the blue sky, the first sign of blue sky in 10 days. While taking Kurgan for his morning walk we disturbed a sleeping Dingo in the bushes at the edge of the caravan park. The first time I had ever seen a Dingo.

Between Nundroo and Yalata on the Eyre Highway we drovew over a grid in the road which is part of the famous Dog Fence. A pest exclusion fence that was built in the 1880’s to keep the dingoes out and to protect the sheep. We saw portions of the Dog Fence, the longest fence in the world.. It is over 5500 kms long and stretches from South Australia to Queensland. We continued to Nundroo Roadhouse.

A few Kms past Nundroo roadhouse we turned off onto a gravel road which led to Fowlers Bay, our camp site for the night. The caravan park is small and situated right on the beach with a road between the park and the beach. Fowlers Bay was named in 1802 by Mathew Flinders, in honour of his First Lieutenant Robert Fowler. In the 1840’s Fowlers Bay was home to a whaling station. Today it is a small seaside community.

The photo below is under the jetty at sunset, Fowlers Bay. Brrrrr – the night is cold from the southerly wind.
