Road Trip – Day 32 (April 16)

On the road again. We travelled to Cowell, 114kms north of Tumby Bay. We had a few problems with Carol & Alans car, The ABS light kept coming on and there was the smell of burning rubber. We had Alan leading our convoy so we would know quickly if he had to stop. It looks like we will be travelling that way to Whyalla (104kms still further north) as that is where the nearest Toyota dealer is.

We stopped at Port Neill for morning tea and a quick look around. Then it was on the road again to Cowell where there are more oyster farms and blue swimmer crabs.

Late afternoon when we thought all action for the day had finished two vintage cars arrived in the caravan park, pulling tiny little caravans. Both cars were from Western Australia, travelling back home after attending a Hot Rod convention in Barmera, South Australia.

One of the driver’s had built both of the vans and finished them about 2 days before leaving for the trip. When you look at the setup of these vans, minimal travelling takes on a whole new meaning.

Here are photos of the De Soto car and its tiny van. The number plate on the car was HapyDaz and the van had the number plate Hapynts. The other car was a 1936 Dodge sedan.

There is a small door on each side of the van which is the size of a double bed. You open up the door and there is just a double bed mattress which a small shelf at the feet end. Clothes are stored under the bed. The back of the van has a tiny kitchen and storage.

There was much interest throughout the caravan park and I would say almost everyone came out for a look at the cars and vans and many photos were taken .
