Road Trip - Day 33 (April 7)

Today we drove inland about 40kms to Cleve where many of my ancestors settled back in the 1800’s. It was a neat & tidy town set amongst the hills. The first thing we saw on entering the town was a street named “Henderson Ave”, named after John Henderson, an ancestor.

We drove up to the Highway Lookout to check out the view which was one of rolling hills and the ocean in the distance. On the way to the lookout we saw a farmer ploughing in a paddock. The dust being produced made a spectacular photo and the farmer must have wondered about these 3 cars stopping to take photos of his tractor.

Around the town of Cleve were these tin dogs. they popped up everywhere and made for an interesting visit.

After lunch Lance & I headed for the cemetery to see if we could find any Henderson grave stones. We drove into the cemetery and the first gravestone we saw was my ancestor Peter Henderson, who emigrated to South Australia in 1840 from Scotland. I had seen his birthplace, Alloa, when we visited Scotland in 1998 and now I had seen his grave. It was his eldest son, James, who is my direct ancestor. A good day in all.

Impressed by the tin dogs of Cleve; also the many pictures of hard working dogs found on your travels. Loving dogs is obviously a Henderson characteristic I am a third or fourth cousin, our common ancestors being Peter Henderson and Hannah Gibson.

Drop me an email at graham.peters@gmail.com as I would be interested in your photos of Peter Henderson's grave
