We missed a day yesterday – the reason being we did very Adelaide River where the kiosk for the cruise was, was a field of water buffalo. We had a great time trying to get decent photos. This photo is of a baby buffalo and the birds are Egrets.
We arrived at the kiosk which only 6 weeks ago was flooded during the wet season. After a short wait we all climbed on the boat and settled down for a cruise on the Adelaide River. Soon there were crocodiles everywhere swimming around the boat where a staff member was dangling a piece of meat on a piece of rope tied to a LONG stick .
The skipper took the boat close to the shore so we could see one sunning itself on the muddy shore of the river. It noticed us and in the blink of an eye was in the water. They can move so quickly. These creatures have not changed for the last 200 million years according to books I read and they have not evolved over that time because they are perfect as they are.
Of course the only good photo of a croc leaping to get his piece of meat is marred by a rope tie on the boat. You can imagine what I said when I saw the photo but it gives you an idea of what they are like. This one was estimated at 5 metres – approx 16 foot – long.
They are such prehistoric looking creatures
Towards the end of the cruise, the left over meat was thrown in the air for the circling Black Kites to grab. They were so hard to photograph as we were being careful not to lean over the boat and have any body boats protruding from the boat. We have seen many of these birds while travelling along. You will see them circling over the road and when you get up close, you will see they are feeding off something that has been killed on the road.
