Road Trip – Day 79 (June 2)

Yesterday was our last day in Kununurra and it was here that we have said goodbye to our travelling companions, Vivo & Eric, Denise & John, and Carol & Alan. We need to be back home by 1 July to look after Luca, another staffy.

We decided to have our last mango smoothies for lunch, together with some sandwiches, at the Zebra Rock Gallery. We had been there earlier in the week for lunch & mango smoothies. Denise, John, Alan & Carol decided to join us.

Denise is the odd one out as she does not like mangos.

Washing clothes, shopping and other caravan housework kept us busy and in the evening we  had a casserole get together for tea. We had a scrumptious meal finished off by tropical fruit and ice-cream for desert.

Saturday dawned, with us back into our pack up routine. There was one last ‘secret men’s business’ gathering around the tow bar of the car, then we were ready to say our goodbyes, hop into the car and get back on the road again.

The drive from Kununurra to Halls Creek was interesting with many creek crossings and ranges to look at. I remembered Carol’s comment about writing down the names of the creek crossing and so we began. I think the explorer who named March Fly Creek was at the bottom of the barrel when he named this one. Once we passed Halls Creek the names of the creeks became more solemn with people names being used. We also started to record the names of the cattle stations we saw. Most of these had the word “Downs” in the name eg “Louisa Downs”. I would love to know why.

Another creek crossing:

From Halls Creek to Fitzroy the drive became a lot more boring, with the landscape flat as far as they eye can see. We were headed for a free camping area called Ngumpan Cliff Lookout. Ngumpan Cliff, is 95km south-east of Fitzroy Crossing. Toilets and shelter sheds are provided, as well as barbecues,  Bear in mind that the cliff top can be very exposed to wind.

We pulled up here for the night and found the view worthwhile, although it became very windy during the night.

Travelling along can be boring sometimes and there is no traffic to photograph so I turned the camera around and pushed the button.

We had turned the air conditioning on to help keep Kurgan cool. He was sitting in the middle of his seat to get the benefit of the cool air and looks as if he is trying to keep awake.

It was a full moon tonight so I decided to take advantage of the light of the moon to photograph a couple of vans near us. It is a 60 second exposure and you can see the movement of the stars in the sky when the photo is enlarged. No other light was used. It shows how bright the moon can be out in the middle of now where.

In this photo I was taking a shot of the lights of a road train going by. You can see a light stream going from right to left.
