Road Trip – Day 85 (June 8)

On the road again, slowly moving closer to home. We were leaving the beautiful Kimberley’s. We head out on the Great Northern Highway towards Port Hedland. It was easy to see why this particular landscape was called the Roebuck Plains – just grass with not a tree in sight. There were a lot of cattle to the side of the road on the station.

The dark thick line in the photo is the tree line where we once again had trees on both sides of the road. In the distance we could see a large number of headlights. As we got closer we saw a large group of motorbikes, and some trikes. The last bike that passed us even had a small solar panel on top of his small trailer. Even Kurgan woke up to take a look at what the noise was going past us.

We reached Sandfire Roadhouse, 298kms from the Roebuck Plains Roadhouse. This roadhouse was savaged by a cyclone in April 2007 but now likes like the cyclone never happened.

Sandfire is one of two roadhouse on the road between Broome and Port Hedland. The other roadhouse is Pardoo. We just had a quick look at their caravan park but decided to drive a further 73 kms to the free camping site on the banks of the De Grey River.

We arrived at the De Grey camp site to find a lot of caravans already there, and this was 2 in the afternoon. We managed to find a spot near the banks of the river for the night. Kurgan heard his first cow this night, mooing in the distance.

Kurgan & I went down to explore the banks of the river, but a swim for Kurgan was out of the question due to the muddy banks of the river caused by the cattle coming down to water. There was still a lot of water in the river a;though the river is usually a dry river bed.

I came back to the river at sunset to see what the sunset was like and very glad that I had done so. The bridge was reflecting in the water and there were some clouds to provide colour to the sky.
