A another beautiful day in Bendigo. This morning the boys decided they were going to season the new Camp oven and the new jumbo waffle irons we had bought back in Barmera. All items and the new billy can, were brought out and someone decided to read the instructions – guess what………..all items were pre-seasoned and ready to use. As we started to pack up the boys decided the canvas bags we pack the camp ovens into would make good hats.
After morning tea we went to have a look at the Buddhist Great Stupa which is the largest Buddhist monument in the western world, including Australia. It is the final home for the largest gem quality Jade Buddha in the world, and is becoming increasingly popular as a major tourist attraction in Victoria. It will be the same size and design as the Great Stupa of Gyantse which is 50 metres (164 feet) wide along each side at its base and nearly 50 metres high.
It is not yet finished and it will be another 4 to 5 years before its completed.
We went inside the gift shop/ information building……………………….
……………where we saw a short video about the Stupa. We then took our shoes off and went into the room that houses the Buddhist relics that will be located in the Stupa when finished.
Outside we saw another beautiful statue:
After this we went to have a look at Marong, just out of Bendigo on the Mildura road. There is not a lot at Marong anymore, just a post office, hotel, and a little lunch shop.
We had lunch alongside the Marong Football oval where we also had a look at the harness racing track with it tiny grandstand.
Mid afternoon found us back at camp. Later on John & Lance went to play pool in the games room where Denise & I had a go at a video bike racing game. Denise won all three races.
