Yesterday was a chill out day at Sandy Point, Hay. We started with a breakfast of toasted bread on the camp fire. Much later we took a drive 14 kms out of town to have a look at the local weir. We were surprised to see a cotton crop. Its the first time any of us had seen a cotton crop so no idea if it was a good one or whether it was ready for harvest.
Today we packed up for our drive of 200 odd kms to Ivanhoe. It started to rain half way and we managed to set up in Ivanhoe just before the rain came. We are checking the road conditions for the road from Ivanhoe to Wilcannia tomorrow as its a dirt road. I did see 3 motorbike riders take off for the dirt road before checking road conditions.
We are still in the long paddock and soon came across the sunset viewing area about 10 kms north of Hay The stainless steel seats were part of the stop.
By the way this area is known as the flattest part of Australia. Most of the trees you see are following rivers or large creeks.
One Tree Hotel was our next stop. This hotel was built in 1862 and named after a single gum tree in the centre of the 200,000 hectare Ulonga Station, the only land mark on the entire plain. Immortilised in poetry by Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson, the hotel started life as a staging post for the Cobb & Co coaches. The one gum tree crashed to the ground in 1897 and the hotel continued as a working hotel until 1942.
Again it was great to see cattle being moved down the Long Paddock. We saw a drover hurrying up the cattle at the back of the mob.
There were cattle on the road and we had to stop until they decided there was no feed on the road and moved to the edge.
We are staying at the Ivanhoe Servo and Caravan Park, owned by a delightful and helpful lady called Wendy. We have electricity , toilets and showers. Both Denise and I have taken the opportunity to do our washing to get the smell of camp fire out of our clothes.
A beautiful sunset tonight.
Tomorrow we hope to decide what direction we are taking.
