1 June 2014:
Happy Winter to all downunders.
Well, we are back in Hay. We drove 200kms to Ivanhoe, the last town on the sealed road in the Long Paddock Drive. Unfortunately the last 182 kms of this drive is on unsealed road.
This morning we made the decision to return to Hay, rather than wait for a road that may not open for days. They close the roads up here as soon as rain falls so as to reduce damage to the road and to stop motorists from getting into trouble. Given the tiny bit of muddy dirt we had to drive on to get into the caravan park, it was easy to see how slippery the roads would be. There are severe fines for cars found travelling on closed wheels.
We made the sensible decision to return on the only road out of town that was open, the sealed road back to Hay. with that decision made we had a last look around town where we saw the sign telling us the road to Wilcania was closed.
As we had seen everything yesterday we drove straight back to Hay where we decided to stay at the showgrounds where we would have showers and power for the night.
We have decided to go to Parkes and Dubbo then back to Bourke, but any part of this plan could change at any time.
By the way the cattle we saw yesterday moving down the Long Paddock had travelled a fair distance further south by today.
Gaffe of the day is given to Joan who saw sheep dogs chasing cattle. Sheep dogs only speak sheep, not cattle. Cattle dogs are used with cattle.
