Today was one of those days when another thing happened to make this trip memorable. Denise was in a shop and asked where she could get a good coffee. She was told to go to The Royal Hotel, a newly refurbished hotel that had only just opened. Of course we decided to have morning tea there and check it out. We met the owner, Mark, who explained a little about the hotel. It was built in 1914 partly by soldier labour as part of their rehabilitation. In more recent years the hotel fell into disrepair and was condemned. Mark and his wife took on the challenge and spent 3 long years, using local tradesmen, restoring the hotel.
And the result is just stunning. We had our morning tea and enjoyed it so much we decided to return for our evening meal. Wow – what service. The boys had steak, perfectly cooked to their requirements while Denise & I had the chicken. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. The owners kept walking around and talking to all customers in the bar and the restaurant. Well done guys………..we wish you all the best. Anyone travelling this way should make a point of visiting this hotel for a meal or a drink.
This morning we went to have a look at the Douglas DC3 Dakota plane that is on display in one of the town’s parks. It was built in 1943 and was used by the RAAF and the RAN until 1974. It was privately bought and later donated to West Wyalong.
What made this special was a gentleman who was looking at the plane as I arrived. As he passed me he told me his brother used to fly this particular plane during the ‘70s. A special moment shared with a stranger makes this memorable.
The plane is in the Lions Park which had the best garbage bins I have ever seen, in the shape of a Lion.
West Wyalong will hold some very special memories for all of us. Thanks to the people of this delightful town in New South Wales.
