Charters Tower…………….Day 117

20 July 2014

18 weeks on the road today and still travelling.

Yesterday, Saturday we had a look around the town to get orientated and found Tower Hill where gold was found in the 1880’s. The hill is riddled with tunnels from the gold days and later during WWII, munitions bunkers were build for the RAAF. When you drive to the top of the hill you can see wire around shafts that are marked  and the munitions bunkers are also in seen.

The view from the top was fantastic.

I have never been to a Rodeo before and there was one on last night. I was getting ready to go when John & Denise decided to go also, so off we went.

We got there just as the sun was setting. I walked past the warm up paddock and saw this scene.

It was a challenge to take photos so I don’t have many but here is one from the bull riding event. This rider is a junior, that is, he is under 18 years.  All juniors performing in adult classes must wear safety helmets.

This morning we all went for a drive around town to have a look. We went past a house that had vehicle hub caps on the fence and the shed. We went back to take a photo.

I saw the owner and went up to ask him for permission to take the photos and here he was, holding a 6 week old Blue Heeler puppy called Jessie.

There are some beautiful old historic buildings around charters Tower. Such were the boom years, between 1872 and 1899, that Charters Towers hosted its own Stock Exchange. Thie building is still standing and is heritage listed.

Another impressive building is the former Australian Bank of commerce.

We also found the Rotary Lookout and what a spectacular view.

Tomorrow we leave for Townsville, which is 134 kms east on the coast. It will be nice to see the ocean again which we haven’t seen since we were in Apollo Bay, Victoria back in April.
