We stayed an extra day at Glen Erin Farmstay as it had rained so much – nearly 65 mms which is over 2 inches in the old language. The rain had gone by the afternoon so the owner, Lyn decided to go ahead with her damper around the camp fire.
Lyn has a pet kangaroo that follows her and the dogs around the property. I even saw her go into the men’s toilets for shelter from the rain.
It was a lovely shaded spot and a peaceful place to stay.
We all went into Bowen but didn’t seen a lot due to the rain. On the way back to Glen Erin we have to cross the main rail link from Cairns to Brisbane. This train was carrying cattle.
Today, Sunday, we drove about 70 kms to Proserpine, south of Bowen. Proserpine is at the turn off from the Bruce Highway to Airlie Beach of the Whitsundays.
We drove out through the sugar cane fields to Lake Proserpine.
Some of the farm machinery used for the production of sugar cane is quite different from that of my wheat and sheep background. For instance this tractor is used for spraying the sugar cane .
It was wall to wall sugar cane today and you could smell a sweet smell around you as you drive past the fields. Looks like we may also stay an extra night here as we are not in a hurry to travel too far south where the weather is still COLD. It has even snowed in Ballarat where we were in May.
