Sarina……………………………….Day 156

28th August 2014

Tonight finds us in Sarina, Queensland, 10 days since my last post.

We were camped at O’Connell River, 20 kms south of Proserpine. While here Lance decided to go to the hospital for his back pain. He came out to the car after an injection and prescriptions for other drugs.By now we had been there for 5 days. Then we decided to pay for 6 days and get our 7th day free, hence the week at O’Connell River. It was easy to find reasons to stay.

Why didn’t I update the blog?????? Very bad internet that kept dropping out. Anyway on the 24th August we left for Lake Elphinstone which was inland. We had heard about this lake from other travellers and decided we needed to check it out. As it was a free camping spot we had no power, no showers and again our internet was almost non existent, but, boy, what a lovely view.

Kurgan was nice enough to wake me up before the sun had risen, so I had a lovely sunrise to photograph.

There was a lot of birdlife here and we spent a lot of time watching the swans do duck dives into the water looking for food. There was a crow that decided to have a conversation with Denise. at one point Denise sat on the ground to entice the crow to come closer but he went to her cup of coffee and spent his time having a good drink of her coffee.

With no TV reception it was easy to spend time getting pains in our necks looking for satellites. The most we saw in one night was 11 (confirmed).

After 3 days of doing nothing in particular we packed up and left for Homebush to stay at the General Gordon Hotel. We had been told about this pub by Dave from our stay at Glen Erin a few days earlier.

The General Gordon Hotel was established in 1886 and stands proudly amongst the cane fields. A very cheap place to stay and very friendly people. Still no internet but we did have TV.

Today we have moved on to Sarina, 38 kms south of Mackay. we are in the middle of the sugar cane fields with a sugar mill right in town working 24 hours a day. When we entered town we could smell molasses coming from the mill.

We will be home by November 10 which isn’t so far away considering that in two days it will be spring.
