Road Trip – Day 47 (May 1)

On the road to Kings Canyon, a place that has been on my bucket list for years. I was disappointed I wasn’t 30 years younger so I could have climbed up to the rim of the Canyon. It is a beautiful place to visit if you like the Australian Outback. The dirt is so red and the name for the centre of Australia is “The Red Centre” is so accurate. The people are friendly and helpful and the landscape is breathtaking at times.

We checked out the way to the top of the canyon. There is sort of a trail of steps where cement has been poured between the rocks. The steps are very uneven and we were worried about getting down from this level. Commonsense prevailed and we came back down and waited for John to come back from the billabong further into the canyon. (Billabong = an area of water).

We stayed at the Kings Canyon Resort and were warned by other campers not to leave shoes of rubbish bags out as the dingoes wander the camping area. I must admit I didn’t fully realise how true their words were. By the time we had set up camp and were having a cuppa, two Dingoes strolled past our car. They move so fast it is difficult to get a good photo of them.

Anxious to see what we could see, we went out to the canyon about 3pm where we found a couple of walks we could do, depending on our fitness etc. The Walk around the rim of the canyon was out of the question for all of us so we decided to walk into the bottom of the canyon where we saw a lot of green vegetation, flowers and trees. When you look carefully around you suddenly realise there are a lot of wild flowers around, a lot of them yellow.

John Denis & I decided to go back out to the canyon for sunset. There is something about sitting in the bush at sunset just watching the canyon change to a reddish colour. There were not very many people around for the sunset compared to when we watched the sunset at Uluru.

Another beautiful sunset. Another thing ticked off my bucket list.
