Road Trip – Day 50 (May 4)

I ended to day by filling one memory card and having to use my backup card – a first. First thing Viv & I went to visit the Reptile Centre. I fell in love with the Bearded Dragon. He sat there and posed for me. I was photographing him through the glass but when travelling like this you have to take what you can in the situation. 20120504_71web

We saw snakes, geckos, lizards and even a crocodile and we both took hundreds of photos of them. I was most interested in seeing a King Brown Snake as they are highly venomous. They are actually a Mulga snake but commonly called the King Brown. I do hope I do not see one on this trip. The wearing of closed in shoes has been a high priority while walking through the bush areas. This is not the best of photos but I wasn’t going to ask the King Brown snake to move so I could get a better photo.

After morning tea Lance & I went off to have a look at the Overland Telegraph Station. The Overland Telegraph comprised 3,200 kilometres of single wire suspended from an insulator mounted on a pin on top of a telegraph pole. On 22 August 1872 the Overland Telegraph between Adelaide and Darwin was completed. The Overland Telegraph itself continued operating for many years and was the means by which the rest of Australia was told of the Japanese attack on Darwin in 1942. The tree in this photo is estimated at over 150 years old.

After lunch I went to the Truck Museum to have a look. In one building alone is over 7 million dollars worth of Kenworth Trucks and another hundred photos. These were a challenge to photograph and the 18 – 200 mm lens was ideal. These truck are huge. Imagine seeing this in your car’s mirror.

I was just enjoying myself photographing old and new trucks of all descriptions when my battery (my spare) also went flat.

Back to camp where we all got ready to go up to the top of ANZAC Lookout to photograph the sunset.
