Leaving Banka Banka Station campsite, we continued along the Stuart Highway towards Daly Waters. There had been 85 mm of rain 3 weeks before we arrived in the area and there was plenty of water around. We saw these cattle near one creek that still had lots of water in it. The Brahman cattle are beautiful creatures.
We were staying at Daly Waters which has the oldest pub in the Northern Territory. Daly Waters also boasts of the first Australian International Airport and today there are signs around that it is an active airstrip. The huge hanger there has a photo display of the war years when it acted as the rear guard for the Australian Ait Force while Darwin was being bombed during the second world war.
The Daly Waters was one of those character pubs you just have to visit. It had hanging from the ceiling, bras, knickers, men’s jocks, hats, caps, foreign paper money and many other articles. Lance hung a cap in the cap area while I hung a blue bra from the roof. John, our youngest male member climbed the bar stool to staple it to the roof. The cost was a gold coin donation to a children;s charity.
We all went to the pub for tea to have BBQ’d Barramundi and were entertained by Chilli who told jokes, recited bush poems and sang a few songs.
