We are on the road again. I think I like it best when we are back on the road. The anticipation of wondering what we might see next always leaves me with a touch of excitement. Today we leave Katherine heading for the Western Australian border. And if you think you have seen the most awesome scenery just wait until you have travelled the Victoria Highway from Katherine to Kununurra.
Firstly we saw some smoke in the distance and I was hoping for some flames as I have been trying to photograph the bush burning with flames in the picture. Today there was a measure of success.
As usual we stopped around 10.30 to stretch and have morning tea. Kurgan loves these breaks as he gets his morning tea, a drink and a walk.
We continued onward to Victoria River Roadhouse. I did not expect to see so much vegetation as we drove along. There were trees everywhere.
We started to pass through the eastern part of the Gregory National Park. This park is divided into the Western portion and the Eastern portion with Aboriginal Lands in between. the scenery was spectacular. Unfortunately I lost the last 50 or so photos I took today when I downloaded them. This had happened before when I had almost used all the space on my memory card. As soon as we reach Kununurra I am going to try to buy a larger memory card.
After crossing the Victoria River Bridge which is as long as Sydney harbour bridge, we reached our lunch destination, the Victoria River Roadhouse. The Victoria River is the largest river in the Northern Territory and what a mighty river it is.
I got one last photo of the spectacular scenery. My memory card would not download the rest of the photos.
We finally reached Timber Creek which I had heard stories about. The Roadhouse is also the general store, the pub, and the local restaurant. Denise and I had the best Supreme Pizzas while the men had burgers, also declared the best. Eric had a go at fishing but was soon back after seeing a freshwater crocodile. They have “feeding the crocodiles” at 5pm so we went down to have a look. John & I had a go each at feeding a crocodile. We were given a long stick with a piece of wire hanging from some rope. The meat was placed on the bent wire. You hold the stick out over the bridge and dunk it in the river until a crocodile comes. You then hold it just above the water for the crocodile to take.
We were told they are fed for 3 months and then are left alone for 3 months to encourage them to seek food in the wild.
