Innisfail………………………Day 126

29 July 2014

Yesterday we drove 25 kms north to see the Babinda Boulders.

The Boulders is a popular cool swimming and picnic area in the tropical rainforest in the foothills of Bartle Frere  at 1622m, Queensland’s highest mountain. The Boulders area is named for a series of huge outcrops of granite boulders found along Babinda Creek amongst volumes of sparkling, cascading, cool, clear mountain water.

The rain forest around here is lush and there is so much of it that it is difficult to photograph.

I came across these fungi but don’t know their name yet.

Today we needed to do some shopping. While driving around Innisfail we saw this dog in a ute a few times.

Today we drove out to Mourilyan Harbour, just south of Innisfail and to Etty Point hoping to see a Cassowary bird. The coast from Townsville to Cairns is called the Cassowary Coast. The cassowary is Australia's heaviest flightless bird even though the Emu is taller. Cassowaries are not common and may be hard to find. Lance and I decided the only cassowary we were going to see was the statue of one at the entrance of our caravan park.

Driving out to the harbour we saw a wallaby.

……………..and a dead cane toad. These are such ugly things.

The harbour has a large sugar loading facility but unfortunately there were no ships being loaded.

We heard from Denise and John today we have arrived at Weipa on their Cape York adventure and all is well.

More prawns today for tea. I am going to miss the seafood we have been eating along the coast, as we head for Mareeba, which is inland.
