Glen Innes, NSW………………….Day 177

17 Sept 2014.

53 days left before we are home  ……………

and its getting colder as we move south.

Yesterday we were waiting to hear our sway bar for the caravan had arrived in Ipswich. Finally around 3.15pm we finally heard it had arrived. We are ready to move on safely.

There was another group of West Australians camping opposite us in the Ipswich Showgrounds. Not just the same state but they knew people at Melros where Denise and John live and who they know well.

We were also given some free tickets to the twilight dog races so John, Denise and I decided to go and have a look. There wasn’t a large attendance but we did enjoy having a bet. I came home $3.20 down, after betting on 9 races. John & Denise also came home a few dollars down. The tote would never make a fortune from us

Today we woke up to greet the new day, a beautiful sunny day. After packing up the vans we were on the road, our final destination being Glen Innes, about 300 kms south. We headed out on the Cunningham Highway towards Warwick. It was an interesting drive, especially as we were going over The Great Dividing Range.

We were down to 40kms on some hairpin bends. There were signs warning of falling rocks but the best one was the one saying:

“Falling Rocks, Do Not Stop”……………………………..I had to wonder what you do if a rock falls on the car …………………….

This sign was where there was a huge bank of sea containers stacked 2 wide and 2 high for about 100 metres. They were filled with blue metal and some of the containers were badly damaged and were acting as a barrier.

Just before Warwick we stopped for morning tea. The scenery was beautiful and so green. A convoy of soldiers drove into these mountains you can see as we had our drinks.

Lunch was at Wallangarra, another small town that provides a rest area suitable for trucks and caravans with shelters and toilets. Mandurah City Council should take note.

Kurgan decided he should be also wearing a hat.

Wallangarra is on the border and lunch was our last meal in Queensland. A couple of kms down the road and we were in New South Wales.

Glen Innes has strong ties to Scotland having been largely founded by Scots. To further strengthen these ties to Scotland, Glen Innes is the site for the Australian Standing Stones and are recognised by the Celtic council of Australia as the national gathering point for Celtic descendants and clans.

The Standing Stones comprise of 40 granite monoliths of which 24 represent 24 hours of the day.

We are staying at the Glen Innes Showgrounds, another nice spot for an overnight stay.  Here is the sunset tonight.
