Today we all decided to do a day trip 100kms south east of Port Augusta to Stone Hut. Some of you may remember me mentioning I had found my ancestor, Peter Henderson’s grave stone. When Peter married Hannah Gibson, he set up a Blacksmith at Stone Hut where today the Stone Hut Bakery stands. This is a place I have wanted to visit for a long time.
We travelled into the Flinders Ranges, passing through Horrocks Pass. The views were spectacular. Half way though the pass we turned onto a dirt road to go to Hancocks Lookout. We met Holly the sheep dog at the turn off. Another contribution to my “Dogs in Vehicles” collection.
We passed through a farm to get to Hancocks Lookout and stopped on the way to photograph a Wedge Tail Eagle. Such a magnificent bird.
John took my camera as I wasn’t game to climb over the rocks. He got some good shots. here is one.
We reached the lookout and the view was spectacular. It was also windy & freezing cold.
After looking around Wilmington, we headed down to Stone Hut. The Stone Hut Bakery is where Peter & Hannah’s blacksmith was. They arrived at Stone hut in 1874 and sold the property to Andrew Craig when they decided to move to Cleve. there is a historical walk which we followed but there are no other commercial business’.
We felt we needed to check out the pies produced at this bakery and a little while later the pies were pronounced as “good”.
While driving around there are times when you ask the question “Why?” this was one of those times when we saw a ‘rocket’ in a front yard.
When the sun is shining, the Flinders Ranges are beautiful to look at By afternoon we had sunshine and this is what I saw.
